Having a small breakdown

I just called into my doc and the results are in. My doctor has not had a chance to review the results yet but the nurse could tell I was anxious and gave me a bit of it.

Pretty much it came back abnormal and without medical intervention are chances are greatly decreased. Honestly I didn't hear much more after that. I tried to sound calm but I was losing it. I have no idea how I'm going to make it through today.

She said they would call me back later on today after talking to the doctor and getting an official prognosis and plan of action. She was very persistent in telling me not to tell him about it until I have all the information.

I just don't know what to do right now.

*Update*

Thankfully the nurse called me back within the hour. Even with not crying I think she could tell I was a basketcase.

So the official stats are this -

Very low chance of conception without medical intervention

Total count is 74 million (over 40 is good, so this number is fantastic)
Viability is 84% (over 50 is preferred)
Concentration is 17 million (should be over 20)
Mobility is 17% (should be over 50%)

First plan of action is going to see a Urologist. This should be a cheaper option instead of going straight to the fertility clinic.

I feel a bit numb right now. We are officially a statistic.

  1. I'm so sorry :( I know how hard it is to get just a little tid-bit of bad news and wonder for the rest of the day what it all means... hopefully your doctor will call soon.

  3. I remember when I first was given the news that my husband's count was below 1 million. I hadn't done any research at that point but I knew it was bad. You kind of go into show. Accepting that you can't do it the old fashioned way is absolutely difficult. Hopefully minimal intervention will be required in your case!

  4. I am so sorry that you got the bad news,

I know this sounds crazy but I have always found that after the initial shock, it makes me feel better to know what we are dealing when and I can tackle it head on!!

I hope you are able to get through this with minimal intervention!

  5. Lindsay, I'm so sorry mate... Not what you wanted right now I know.

First and foremost, apart from them being a little bit too well despersed in his semen (and not hugely at that), their only major problem is that they're not moving so well. They've not given you morphology so it is hard to tell whether it is because they are sporting two tails or just haven't worked out how to swim well. Having said that, it leaves one major area to fix.

Soooo, do you have Menevit or something similar over there?? If you don't, basically Menevit is a conception aid for men. It contains a whole bunch of things (Zinc, Vit C, Vit E, garlic, Selenium etc). After three months taking it, many blokes actual record a significant improvement in there SA results and some even become normal. It is DEFINITELY worth investigating. If you don't have prepackaged aids for blokes then get him on zinc and selenium because they are the two powerhouses for building strong, healthy sperm.

Second of all, as much as it seems like the end of the world right now, you have an answer for why it has been difficult to conceive. No more stumbling around in the dark, hoping desperately something might happen. You know there is a problem and you/he can both have a go at fixing it.

You also know what is going to be involved from here. Yes, you may end up needing intervention but for this child and for any more that you have, you know the score and can get straight to the point.

Intervention isn't such a bad thing and can really be as simple as doing IUIs (injecting sperm straight up the top of your uterus so the good ones only have a short distance to go rather than fighting the jungle of your cervix). Finances will be the big thing but I know over here the out of pocket expense after rebates is only a a couple hundred. It is worth now investigating to what your health care provider and private health insurance can do for you. Also, don't be afraid to shop around. Different folks charge different amounts depending upon whether their hearts or pockets are bigger.

You will get through this. I know it seems insurmountable at the moment but as one of PPs said, it is the initial shock and sting which hurts the most. Once you've had a little time to get your head around it and learn what needs to happen from here, it will get easier.

    Chin up! xxxx

  6. I got the same phone call at one point. I know how brutal it can be, I'm sorry...

His numbers are definitely not the worst that I've seen, my husbands are below 1 million. The urologist should be very helpful, he may even put him on clomid.

Other options are a supplement regimen consisting of high amounts of Anti-Oxidents, Vitamin C and Folic Acid, or Acupuncture.

    Best wishes.
